As war broke out over Europe, Germany's Blitzkrieg tactics were taking the
continent by storm. France fell within six weeks and left England as the last
outpost of freedom. The battle of Britain had begun. Germany sent the full might
of their Luftwaffe across the channel to destroy the RAF and open the doors for
invasion. But...the British airmen fought tooth and nail, unwilling to yield,
even for a second.
'Never before have so many, owed so much, to so few.' ~ Winston Churchill

In June of '41, most of the Luftwaffe was called off that front to make war
with Russia. The Red Army and Air Force were all but decimated, being pushed
back to the doorsteps of Moscow and Stalingrad. The woeful Russian air force,
fighting in antiquated equipment, threw up whatever would fly. The Luftwaffe was
having a field day, with aerial victories in reaching the hundreds, Russia had
few bright spots.

December of '41 brought America into the war, and the allies an industrial
giant. Russia was being given P-39 and P-40 fighters on a lend lease program.
England was receiving bombers, fighters and transports via the RAF ferry command
(civilian pilots flying to England over the North Atlantic route). P-38 and P-38
fighters made their way to North Africa, "the MTO." Not quite on terms
with their rivals, the allied pilots quickly learned their role and the tide
began to turn. Going to the offensive over the Mediterranean, Italy soon
capitulated. In the meantime, Germany was being bombed around the clock,
Americans by day, British by night. While the P-47 and P-51 began to wrestle air
superiority away from the Messerschmitt and Focke Wulf fighters.
By June 6, 1944, D-Day, the Luftwaffe could hardly put planes into the air to
defend their beach heads, partially because the bulk of their force was fighting
on the Russian front. Once again on the continent, the allies could place air
wings where they could reach deep into the heart of the fatherland. Pressing in
on every side, allied pilots destroyed anything that moved. Russian planes
and tactics came on par, and British and Americans ruled the skies, the air war
over Europe was essentially over.
For the men who fought in the skies over Europe, their exploits are legend.
They are heroes.
Each book contains 49 pages of aerial artwork depicting specific action in the conquest for air superiority. Each drawing is accompanied by a date, fighter group, name and rank of the pilot, as well as a brief description of the encounter.
